GMC Name Meaning

If you ask Porter or New Caney drivers, “What does GMC stand for?” you’ll likely get the answer: General Motors Company. While true today, that’s not what it was always called. In 1902 when Max Grabowsky sold his first truck, the company had the name Grabowsky Motor Vehicle Company. After a reorganization, the name changed to Rapid Motor Vehicle Company until the company was fully acquired by William Durante in 1909 where it became a subsidiary of General Motors. The first GMC (General Motors Truck Company) logo would then be seen on trucks in 1912.

Who Owns GMC? GMC History

Take a stroll through the GMC’s journey in the automotive industry:

  • 1902: Max Grabowsky founded Grabowsky Motor Vehicle Company which was reorganized into Rapid Motor Vehicle Company later that year. The company developed some of the world’s first trucks.
  • 1909: General Motors acquired Rapid Motor, resulting in General Motors Truck Company.
  • 1912: The company released the first mass-produced truck, selling over 22,000 models.
  • Between 1941 and 1945: During WWII, the company became a crucial provider to the U.S. Military and manufactured over 600,000 trucks, including cargo trucks, dump trucks, tankers, bomb transporters, and fire engines. An amphibious vehicle called the DUKW, or “Duck”, became famous during combat. These vehicles would later be used as tour vehicles in U.S. cities.
  • Who owns GMC today? GMC under the GM umbrella is owned by shareholders since it is a public company.

Is GMC Chevy?

From GMC’s history, you can see the company was rapidly expanding during its formative years. So, is GMC Chevy? Yes, GM acquired the Chevrolet Motor Company in 1918. Today, Chevy creates a wide range of vehicles, from subcompact cars to full-size pickup trucks. GMC and Chevy are just a few subsidiaries of GM. Other companies include Buick, Cadillac, and more.
